What to pack for a safari in East Africa

Layers, boots and the small things people always forget.

October 5, 2026 · 1 min read

Pack for warm days, cool mornings and small aircraft. Less is more on safari, and almost everything can be washed at your lodge.

Clothes

  • Neutral colours such as khaki, olive and sand. Dark blue and black attract tsetse flies.
  • Layers: a warm fleece for early game drives, light long sleeves for the sun.
  • A waterproof jacket, especially for gorilla and chimpanzee treks.
  • Leave camouflage at home: some East African countries do not allow it for civilians.

For the forest

  • Broken-in walking boots with grip.
  • Gardening gloves for grabbing branches and nettles.
  • Long trousers you can tuck into your socks.
  • A small daypack with water and snacks.

The small things people forget

  • Binoculars, one pair each if you can.
  • A power bank and the right plug adapter for each country.
  • A soft bag: light aircraft usually limit you to about 15 kg in soft luggage.
  • Your yellow fever certificate and any medication. Ask a travel clinic about malaria advice for your route.

When you book with us we send a packing list for your exact route and season.
